alexander.ostroff@gmail.com"On my fifteenth birthday I'll run away from home, journey to a far-off town, and live in a corner of a small library."
- Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore
I take pleasure in the minute details of life: the rustling of pages in a coffee shop, the tiny shivers from a perfect autumn wind, the smell of new books, time spent with my campers on a five day canoe trip, or an opening chord that resonates *just* so. Without music, film or literature, I’d likely fade out of existence in a month. I try to avoid being pretentious but sometimes it gets away from me.
I’m helpless when faced by an author with a penchant for unapologetically broken characters and innovative writing styles. Moreso, perfect musical moments. Pop, indie, rock, classical, jazz, whatever. I live and die for those 5 seconds that hit you right in the sweet spot in the gut or the head or the ear or the heart.
"There are people who think death a fate worse then boredom...There are people who, needing a place to put umbrellas, go to Ikea and purchase an umbrella stand for easy home assembly – and there are people who drive 100 miles to an auction in the heart of Shropshire and spot the potential in an apparently pointless 17th century farming implement."
- Helen DeWitt's The Last Samurai
“Constantly talking isn’t necessarily communicating.”
- Charlie Kaufman’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
"Your books are arranged by the color of their spines, she said. How stupid....She didn't say, You are going to marry. And she didn't say, I am going to kill myself. Only: How do you arrange your books?"
- JSF's Everything Is Illuminated
I’m passionate about my numerous obsessions, from music to politics and back again. The only thing I really want to do with my life is affect some change for the better in the world, and as saccharine and nauseating as it may sound, I truly believe that people can bring about change, if they just bother to throw themselves into it. In the meantime, as my great-uncles would say in ridiculous Egyptian-French accents, I’m currently wasting my life and my parents’ money finishing up a degree in Political Science and International Relations at McGill. I’m cynical enough to think that they’re right, and idealistic enough to hope that they’re not.
We are young despite the years
We are concerned
We are hope despite the times
-- These Days, R.E.M.
"Whatever happens a world will end. And another one will begin."
-Thomas Wharton's Salamander
- Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore
